Only fill the bathtub as much as you need.

Make sure that your bathtub drain plug doesn’t leak. Replace the plug if necessary.

Install a low-flow showerhead.

Repair faucet, toilet and showerhead leaks.

Take a shorter shower.

Turn off the water while soaping up.

Install faucet aerators.

Do not let the water run while you brush your teeth, wash your face or shave.

Don’t overfill only to force the unneeded water into the overflow drain.

To maximize showering efficiency make sure that you have installed a low-flow showerhead in all of your bathrooms.

 

The single best thing you can do to improve toilet efficiency is to replace an old inefficient toilet with a new toilet. Older toilets use 2 to 3 times the amount of water that a new high efficiency toilets use.

If replacing your toilet isn’t an option, at least make sure that your toilet isn’t leaking and replace the flapper if necessary.

Don't use the toilet as a trash can and NEVER flush oil or grease down a toilet.

Try to run the dishwasher only when it is full of dishes. In most cases running the dishwasher with a full load of dishes will use less water than washing the same number of dishes by hand.

Fill your sink with water for rinsing if you are washing dishes by hand.

Avoid running the tap for a cold drink. Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator.

Don't let the water run while washing vegetables or dishes.

Don't prewash your dishes prior to putting them in the dishwasher.

Turn faucets off when not in use. Don't leave water on while doing dishes or brushing your teeth.

Operate the washer with full loads only – even if the machine has an adjustable load setting.

If your washer has a variable water volume setting, select the minimum amount required per load.

Check your clothes washer hoses regularly for cracks that could result in leaks.

Newly installed turfgrass sod has very important watering needs. Proper watering immediately after installation will ensure the turf gets established, and it will also have an impact on how well the lawn continues to flourish for years to come. Begin watering new turfgrass sod within a half hour after it is laid on the soil. Apply at least 1 inch of water so that the soil beneath the turf is very wet. Ideally, the soil 3 to 4 inches below the surface should be moist. For the next two weeks keep the below-turf soil surface moist with daily (or more frequent) watering. Especially hot, dry or windy periods will necessitate increased watering amounts and frequency. If you do this, your sod should be rooted well within 2 weeks and you can reduce the amount and frequency of watering.

 

Generally watering at night, less days per week will encourage a more healthy lawn.

Check your automatic irrigation system for leaks.

Use a broom to clean driveways, walks and patios instead of a hose.

Use a commercial car wash for vehicle washing.

Water the lawn in the early morning to avoid evaporation during the summer. Water in the mid-morning during the winter to avoid freezing.

Mow your lawn to two inches or more and leave the clippings to provide nutrients and help retain moisture.

Water slowly, deeply, thoroughly and infrequently to encourage root growth.

Water trees and shrub beds separately from your lawn. Some shrubs like this may only need to be watered once or twice a month.

Aerate regularly and use mulch to reduce evaporation.

Plant native or drought-tolerant plants and trees (xeriscape).

Check your sprinkler system to make sure it is working properly and not watering walks, driveways or the street.

Check your sprinkler system for leaks.

Use a Pool Cover. Evaporation will be reduced by 50%.
