MAY 27, 2010 - AL/MS AWWA Education Seminar Series –
Session 1:  Leadership and Management:   “Overcoming Hardship Through Effective Leadership”

 In the last two years, Daphne Utilities has been named one of the “Top Small Workplaces” in America by both the Wall Street Journal and Inc. Magazine and has received recognition for operational excellence from the US EPA.  It wasn’t always like this, however!  Just a few years ago, the utility struggled to meet basic customer water demand and was on the verge of financial ruin.  During this session, our General Manager, Rob McElroy, will share how not accepting “good enough” as good enough anymore helped turn the entire organization around! 


APRIL 21, 2010 – Oklahoma Rural Water Annual Conference – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

APRIL 19-20, 2010 – Alabama Water Environment Association (AWEA) Annual Conference – Orange Beach, Alabama
Ron spoke twice to the attendees at this conference located at beautiful Orange Beach, Alabama!  On Monday, he showed them low cost ways for a utility company to get its story out in an effective way that doesn’t have to break the bank.  On Tuesday, he shared with them Daphne Utilities way of finding great people even in the worst of times and how to hold onto them even after the economy turns around.

APRIL 13, 2010 – University of South Alabama Engineering Leadership Class – Mobile, Alabama

Rob helped the graduating engineering students ready themselves for their first real interviews in the professional world with his presentation of “How to WOW in an Interview Now”.  Following this, he organized a panel discussion with representatives from local engineering companies (HMR and Volkert & Assoc.) and the Corps of Engineers to allow the students to ask direct questions about changing trends in the business world relating to the interview process.


MARCH 16, 2010 – Alliance Indiana Rural Water Association Annual Conference – Bloomington, Indiana
Rob traveled to Bloomington, Indiana to deliver a powerful Keynote address to the attendees at this conference about the power of bringing people together in utility organizations.  He also delivered a highly informative and useful presentation on Effective Customer Outreach that doesn’t have to break the bank to work well.


FEBRUARY 22, 2010 – The Utility Management Conference – San Francisco, CA

Rob spoke to utility managers from across the country on how they can find and keep great people on their staff in any economy, good or bad. Drawing from the lessons learned from legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant, Rob delivered a powerful and memorable presentation that allowed the 100+ attendees in his session to see how they can apply these principles to become “winners” year-in and year-out!


SEPTEMBER 9, 2009– AWRA Symposium - Orange Beach, Alabama

Rob delivered another great presentation to the Alabama Water Resources Association annual meeting in Orange Beach, Alabama. This group is working to protect water as a natural resource for all of us to use. Protecting water resources from the hazards of sewer spills is a key componebt of our programs here at Daphne Utilities.

AUGUST 26, 2009 - Customer Service Seminar (part of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce Business Academy Program)
Great Customer Service is a key part of the success we have experienced here at Daphne Utilities. On this day, Rob shared with the attendees his insights into how any business can apply these same principles to help them find success even in today’s troubling economy. Joining him in presenting great customer service stories were Loni Jarman of Chic-fil-A and Chuck Cuff from Homewood Suites Hotels.

APRIL 9, 2009 – “How to WOW in an Interview Now!” - Baldwin County Job Fair – Robertsdale, AL

This is a presentation offered to job seekers everywhere!   Winning ideas still have to be sold.  The greatest winning today may be for a prospective employer to hire you to work for their company.   Even in this economy, companies are still looking for the very best workers they can find.  You could be the greatest worker ever but, if you cannot sell this idea to an employer, you’re going to be overlooked by a hiring manager.  This presentation shows you some very effective ways to prepare and deliver the message: ”Hire me…I am the best!”

MARCH 31, 2009 – “Real Life Engineering – Parts 1 & 2” - University of South Alabama – Mobile, AL

These two presentations were delivered to the University of South Alabama’s “Engineering Leadership” class.  It is intended to give soon-to-graduate engineers a peek at the life ahead of them as entry level engineers in the real world.   It is broken into two segments.  Part 1 deals with real life engineering and how to quickly get up to speed in business.  Part 2 provides insight into the four types of people you will encounter in business and how to interact with each of them effectively; and also an overview into planning your career path.

MARCH 16, 2009  - Alabama Rural Water Association (ARWA) Annual Conference, Montgomery, Alabama

Mr. McElroy spoke to representatives from rural water systems throughout Alabama on ways they could easily improve their Customer Service efforts and why remarkable Customer Service is one of the best bets you can make in the business world.

JANUARY 2009 - Utility Executive Publication

Following up on the success of his presentation at the WEFTEC 2008 Conference, the Water Environment Federation published a multi-page article by Mr. McElroy  In the January/February 2009 issue of “Utility Executive” publication.  The article, entitled “Engineers Are From Mars; Utilities Are From Venus”, Mr. McElroy detailed ways that engineers and utility companies can increase their levels of success by following some simple rules for relationship building.  To view a copy of this publication, click here.  


OCTOBER 20, 2008 - Engineers are from Mars, Utilities are from Venus - WEFTEC Conference - Chicago, Illinois

Mr. McElroy was invited to speak before the World Environment Federation Annual Conference (WEFTEC 2008) in Chicago, Illinois on October 20, 2008.  In a presentation entitled, “Engineers are from Mars, Utilities are from Venus”, he outlined the benefits of building strong relationships between utility companies and the engineers with which they work.  Attending this presentation were utility managers and engineers from across the country!

OCTOBER 6-7, 2008 - Fats, Oil and Grease Management Conference - Providence, Rhode Island

Mr. McElroy spoke to the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) sponsored “Fats, Oil and Grease Management Conference” in Providence, Rhode Island on the Daphne Utilities Oil Recycling and Biodiesel Programs as well as a special presentation on Effective Public Outreach.  This conference was one of the best organized events of this type we have participated in and we certainly look forward to involvement in more of these specialty training opportunities!

General Manager Rob McElroy spoke to the Thompson Engineering “Lunch and Learn” session on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 on the importance of developing effective relationships between Utility Companies and the Consulting Engineering firms that support them.  This program, entitled “Engineers are from Mars, Utilities are from Venus” uses the relationship lessons we learn from people like Dr. Phil to build better professional relationships.

This exciting new conference is organized by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and sponsored by the EPA.  It is an ideal conference for utility operators to learn new ways to deliver high quality services in a sustainable fashion that saves money and safeguards the environment.  Rob McElroy was invited to present to this group on our Oil Recycling and Biodiesel programs to much good feedback!  People all over the world continue to embrace this simple program of ours that can truly make a difference in utility operation and your bottle line.

2008 Oil Recycling and Biodiesel Workshop

The Utility has been provided a grant by ADECA to conduct workshops around the state to provide instruction on how other cities and utility providers can begin Oil Recycling and Biodiesel programs of their very own.   Workshops will be held in Mobile, Dothan, Montgomery, Birmingham and Huntsville.  For those attending the sessions and desiring a copy of the PowerPoint slideshow, you may click the following link to access a copy.  Note: Slideshows may vary slightly from event to event. 


JUNE 10, 2008 - American Water Works Association (AWWA) Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE 2008) Atlanta, GA

General Manager Rob McElroy was invited to address the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE 2008) in Atlanta, Georgia.  The presentation on our Oil Recycling and Biodiesel Programs brought inquiries from utilities across the country from Hawaii to Rhode Island.  This conference is considered to be the most comprehensive and diverse water conference in the world and it was an honor to brief them on our programs.  This proves that you don’t have to be the biggest utility in the country to still lead the way!

JUNE 4, 2008 - Mississippi Water Environment Association (MWEA) 51st Annual Meeting and Technical Conference

Daphne Utilities presented its Oil Recycling and Biodiesel Programs to the Mississippi Water Environment Association (MWEA) 51st Annual Meeting and Technical Conference on June 4, 2008.   The MWEA, a member association of the international Water Environment Federation (WEF), is dedicated to advancing understanding of water pollution control technologies and the preservation of the water environment in Mississippi. The Association’s membership includes engineers, operators, scientists, industrial and municipal facility managers, and regulatory officials.

APRIL 21- 24, 2007 - Alabama League of Municipalities Convention - Huntsville, Alabama

Daphne Utilities was honored by the Alabama League of Municipalities in 2007 with their Municipal Achievement Award for our Oil Recycling and Biodiesel Programs. As such, representatives from the Utility traveled to Huntsville to take part in the award presentation. You can view the original project submittal to the League by clicking here.
